A newly reimagined revival of Moira Buffini’s Handbagged, a sharp and satirical take on Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher’s private meetings, is set to tour England from February to May. The production, featuring fresh musical elements and 80s pop classics, will arrive at The Lowry, Salford, from 18th to 22nd March.

Produced by Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch in partnership with the National Theatre, the tour is part of the Theatre Nation Partnerships initiative. Directed by Alex Thorpe, this version of Handbagged brings a fresh perspective to Buffini’s witty and insightful script, exploring the complex dynamic between two of Britain’s most formidable female leaders. The show will incorporate newly composed music, a cappella arrangements, and inventive remixes of 80s hits.

Cast Announcement

The role of Margaret Thatcher will be played by Emma Ernest (The Other Place, National Theatre) and Morag Cross (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Palace Theatre), while Queen Elizabeth II will be portrayed by Helen Reuben (Cabaret, English Theatre Frankfurt) and Sarah Moyle (Doctors, BBC).

The ensemble also features Cassius Konneh and Gerard McDermott in multiple roles, with Tiajna Amayo and Jane Quinn as understudies.

A Word from the Director

Director Alex Thorpe shared his excitement about the production, stating:

“I am thrilled to welcome this multi-talented cast as we embark on the most ambitious Theatre Nation Partnerships tour yet. As we reexamine these fierce and famed women, this ensemble brings some of the UK’s most exciting creative talents to Moira Buffini’s satirical and razor-sharp comedy. With Katie Lias’ striking contemporary set, Kate Marlais’s bold reworking of 80s pop classics, and Ryan Day’s award-winning lighting design, this production promises to be truly extraordinary.”
