Leeds Playhouse is set to host the award-winning, powerful drama Punch for spring 2026, marking the only Northern venue to stage this Olivier Award-winning production by acclaimed playwright James Graham (Dear England, This House, BBC’s Sherwood), following its smash-hit runs on Broadway and the West End.
Based on the true story and Jacob Dunne’s book Right From Wrong, Punch explores themes of hope, humanity, and the potential for personal transformation. Directed by Adam Penford, the play tells the story of Jacob, a teenager from Nottingham whose impulsive punch has tragic consequences. After serving time in prison, Jacob meets Joan and David, the parents of his victim, James, sparking a profound journey of change and reflection.
The production premiered at the Young Vic before transferring to Broadway and the West End, earning critical acclaim:
★★★★★ “Another state-of-the-nation masterpiece from James Graham” – The Telegraph
★★★★★ “It is a play every single person should see” – WhatsOnStage
★★★★★ “James Graham’s most moving work yet” – The Times
James Graham, Nottingham-born and one of Britain’s most celebrated writers, transforms Jacob Dunne’s gripping real-life account into a theatrical experience that is energetic, entertaining, and deeply moving.
Adam Penford said:"It’s been a whirlwind journey, seeing this Nottingham-based story, made at Nottingham Playhouse, affecting audiences so deeply across the globe. We hope the play continues to help those involved in campaigning for justice."
Shawab Iqbal, Chief Executive of Leeds Playhouse, added:"We’re incredibly proud to welcome back Olivier Award-winning playwright James Graham with his acclaimed hit play Punch. This will be a compelling piece of theatre that provokes, inspires, and connects."
