Here & Now The Steps Musical: A Glittering Night of Pop, Camp & Heart
Here & Now – The Steps Musical brings the iconic hits of Steps to life in a brand-new, high-energy jukebox musical. Created with love by the band’s creative team and directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, the show blends fun, camp, and heart in equal measure. Set in the quirky seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, it follows a group of friends chasing love, happiness, and a little bit of chaos along the way. With its infectious songs, playful humour, and colourful staging, the musical promises a sparkling night out for both die-hard Steps fans and anyone who loves a feel-good theatre experience.

Set amid the aisles of Better Best Bargains, the story follows Caz (Rebecca Lock), who has just received news she can adopt a child, and her mission to create a “Summer of Love” for herself and her best friends Vel (Jacqui Dubois), Neeta (Rosie Singha), and Robbie (Blake Patrick Anderson). Along the way, the group contends with secret affairs, romantic crushes, and workplace chaos, while the seemingly idyllic life of Caz is challenged by past loss and present drama.
Although the narrative occasionally leans into soap opera clichés, the emotional depth—particularly in Caz’s heartfelt moments—balances the camp, resulting in a story that is touching, fun, and surprisingly poignant. The musical deftly weaves contemporary humour, unexpected references, and a celebration of queer joy into a plot that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.

Tom Rogers’ set design and Gabriella Slade’s costumes bring the show to life with bold Pop Art colours, glittering sequences, and eye-catching flair. The airport scene, in particular, bursts with visual delight, while the neon-lit set throughout maintains a vibrant, playful atmosphere.
Howard Hudson’s lighting design enhances every moment, complementing the choreography by Matt Cole, which cleverly nods to iconic Steps routines while adding fresh, original energy.
Of course, the heart of the production is the music. Hits like Tragedy, 5,6,7,8, Stomp, and Chain Reaction are threaded seamlessly into the story. Whether audience members are die-hard Steps fans or newcomers to the catalogue, the songs are irresistible, prompting singalongs, laughter, and plenty of toe-tapping.

Rebecca Lock shines as Caz, balancing humour and heartbreak while delivering powerhouse vocals that captivate the theatre – her presence is nothing short of commanding. Jacqui Dubois’ Vel adds warmth and wonderful comic relief, while Rosie Singha’s quirky and bright Neeta brings boundless energy and charm. Blake Patrick Anderson’s Robbie is full of heart and humour, making him instantly likeable.
River Medway brings flair and fabulousness to drag star Jem, adding colour, fun, and a welcome queer perspective to the story. Finty Williams’ Patricia, Lauren Woolf’s Tracey, and John Stacey’s Lesley all sparkle in their supporting roles, while the ensemble inject non-stop energy and fun through their high-octane dance routines. Together, the cast deliver charisma and connection in spades, creating the feeling of a tight-knit group of friends you can’t help but want to join.

Here & Now is a sparkling, fun, and surprisingly moving jukebox musical. While the story occasionally leans into predictable tropes, the combination of energetic choreography, dazzling set and costume design, and heartfelt performances makes it an absolute joy to watch. Audiences leave with laughter, tears, and an irresistible urge to belt out their favourite Steps hits.
If you’re looking for a night of glitter, pop, and campy chaos—punctuated with moments of genuine emotion—Here & Now delivers in spades. A four-star recommendation, it’s the perfect way to step back into a neon-filled world of friendship, love, and classic Steps magic.
