I recently had the delightful experience of watching "Shark in the Park" at Home Manchester with my husband and our two children, aged 5 and 6. This delightful production, adapted by Simon Beattie from Nick Sharratt’s beloved books, promised an afternoon of family fun. Brought to life by the talented folks at Nonsense Room Productions, the show didn’t just meet our expectations—it blew them out of the water!
The story ingeniously weaves together three of Sharratt’s charming books: "Shark in the Park," "Shark in the Dark," and "Shark in the Park on a Windy Day." It all begins with the intrepid Timothy Pope, who, armed with his trusty telescope, sets off on a series of whimsical adventures in search of the elusive shark. Each scene is filled with hilarious misadventures and imaginative escapades, keeping both children and adults eagerly anticipating what’s next. The seamless transition from one story to the next maintained a fun and upbeat pace throughout, ensuring there was never a dull moment.
One of the most enchanting aspects of the show was its level of audience interaction. My children, along with the rest of the young audience, were encouraged to participate throughout the performance. They loved shouting, “There’s a shark in the park!” and pointing out the hidden shark that Timothy missed. This level of engagement made the kids feel like a part of Timothy’s adventure and added an extra layer of excitement to the experience.
The set design was nothing short of magical. It felt like stepping into a vibrant, larger-than-life storybook. With colourful backdrops and clever cutouts, the set perfectly captured the whimsical essence of Sharratt’s illustrations. Additionally, a screen displayed animations whenever Timothy looked through his telescope, showing us exactly what he saw. This clever use of technology added an extra layer of excitement and visual delight to the performance.
The music was another highlight of the show. Each song was catchier than the last, with the Ice Cream Song becoming an instant favourite with my little girl. The musical numbers were well-placed, keeping the energy high and the young audience thoroughly entertained. The repeated tunes, especially the title song, had everyone singing along and tapping their feet.
The cast delivered stellar performances that brought the story to life with charm and energy. The actor playing Timothy Pope was particularly engaging, capturing the excitement and curiosity of the young adventurer with infectious enthusiasm. The portrayal of Timothy’s Dad was equally impressive, combining a wonderfully wry humour with a relatable sense of weariness. The versatility of the remaining actor, who seamlessly switched between multiple roles—such as a seagull, an elderly man, and Timothy’s slightly irritating friend—added layers of depth and humour to the performance.
"Shark in the Park" was an absolute delight from start to finish. The perfect mix of humour, music, and interactive fun kept our entire family entertained. My children were captivated by Timothy’s adventures and left the theatre with big smiles and songs stuck in their heads. For a family outing that combines charm, laughter, and a bit of musical magic, "Shark in the Park" is a must-see. We’re already looking forward to our next adventure with Timothy Pope and his trusty telescope. And a quick note for parents: don’t forget to know where to buy ice cream afterwards – it’s the cherry on top of a fantastic day! Four stars of pure joy!
