Sometimes You Have to Be a Little Bit Naughty… Matilda The Musical at Liverpool Empire
Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s novel, Matilda, Matilda The Musical has become one of the most celebrated family shows of the past 15 years. Created by the Royal Shakespeare Company, with a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the show has toured internationally and continues to introduce new audiences to Matilda’s world.
Its visit to the Liverpool Empire offers families the chance to experience this modern classic live on stage, with all the wit, imagination, and theatrical flair the production is known for.

Matilda The Musical follows the story of an extraordinary young girl with an extraordinary mind. Intelligent, independent, and endlessly curious, Matilda Wormwood grows up in a household that neither understands nor values her. School brings little relief, thanks to the terrifying rule of Miss Trunchbull, but Matilda soon finds comfort in books, storytelling, and the kindness of her teacher, Miss Honey.
The musical stays faithful to Roald Dahl’s original story, balancing dark humour with warmth and heart. It’s a tale about resilience, standing up for what’s right, and finding your voice — themes that continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Rob Howell’s set design remains one of the production’s standout elements, with towering books, classroom scenes, and clever transitions that keep the stage in constant motion. Scene changes are slick and visually engaging, often happening in full view without disrupting the flow of the story.
The lighting works hand-in-hand with the set to create atmosphere, particularly during moments of heightened tension or imagination. Costumes clearly define each character, from Matilda’s understated look to the exaggerated styles of the Wormwoods and Miss Trunchbull’s unmistakably severe silhouette.
Peter Darling’s choreography is energetic and precise, especially in the large ensemble classroom scenes, which are consistently impressive to watch. Tim Minchin’s music and lyrics are smart, funny, and memorable, with a mix of high-energy group numbers and quieter, more reflective songs that support the storytelling well.

At the performance I attended, Sanna Kurihara played Matilda, delivering a confident and assured performance that felt grounded and natural. She captured Matilda’s intelligence and determination beautifully, holding her own on the large Empire stage.
Tessa Kadler brought warmth and sincerity to Miss Honey, providing an emotional anchor to the story, while Richard Hurst was an imposing and darkly comic Miss Trunchbull, clearly relished by the audience.
Adam Stafford and Rebecca Thornhill added plenty of humour as Mr and Mrs Wormwood, and the child ensemble impressed throughout with their focus, energy, and professionalism in what is a demanding production.

Matilda The Musical at the Liverpool Empire is a confident, polished production that offers a thoroughly enjoyable theatre experience for families. With its imaginative staging, clever choreography, and instantly recognisable score, it delivers plenty of moments that genuinely delight both children and adults.
The cast work brilliantly together to bring Roald Dahl’s story to life, supported by inventive design and a strong sense of theatrical playfulness throughout. It’s a show that celebrates intelligence, kindness, and courage, wrapped up in bold visuals and memorable music.
Bright, bold, and full of heart, Matilda The Musical remains a wonderfully entertaining family favourite and a joyful night out at the theatre.
