🚪 A Squash and a Squeeze at Waterside Arts – A Cosy Farmyard Adventure That Still Delights!

As big fans of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, A Squash and a Squeeze has long been a much-loved story in our home. It’s one we’ve read countless times over the years, so getting to see it brought to life on stage again—this time at Waterside Arts in Sale—felt just as exciting as ever.

From the moment the wise old man appeared with his suitcase of “easy peasy solutions”, the audience was instantly drawn into the fun. With lively audience interaction, toe-tapping songs, and plenty of playful chaos, it’s a show that knows exactly how to capture the imagination of young theatre-goers.

This charming stage adaptation follows the little old lady who feels her house is far too small—there’s simply no room to swing a cat! Seeking advice, she’s given a rather unexpected solution: invite the farmyard animals inside.

As a hen, goat, pig and cow gradually take over her tiny home, the chaos builds to wonderfully silly heights. But when everything is finally restored, the old lady discovers that perhaps her house wasn’t so small after all.

It’s a simple yet meaningful story, reminding young audiences about perspective and gratitude, all delivered with warmth, humour, and that unmistakable Donaldson charm.

The set design remains as magical as ever, with the old lady’s cottage unfolding to reveal a bright, storybook-style interior. The way the house shifts and opens adds a lovely sense of surprise, keeping little ones completely engaged as the action unfolds.

The puppetry is a real standout. Each animal is cleverly created using everyday objects, giving the production a wonderfully handmade and imaginative feel. From the hay-filled goat to the delightfully cheeky pig, every character feels full of personality. It’s this creativity that really captures children’s attention—and keeps them giggling throughout.

Leo especially loved the moment the cow danced on the table, while Alice was completely charmed by the biscuit-loving pig—such fun little details that really brought the characters to life.

The original songs are catchy and character-driven, helping to bring each animal to life in a fun and memorable way. There’s plenty of variety too, with each number adding to the playful tone of the show.

Ruth Calkin is wonderfully engaging as the Little Old Lady, capturing both her exasperation and charm with perfect comic timing. Her performance feels warm and relatable, drawing the audience in from the very start.

Mark Esaias, as the Storyteller, ties everything together beautifully, effortlessly guiding the audience through the tale while also showcasing impressive puppetry and character work.

Together, the cast create a playful, engaging atmosphere that keeps younger audiences fully captivated throughout.
